In lyrics the phrase is often used to describe a depressed mood. Though usage of the phrase in African American music may be older, it has been attested to since 1912 in Memphis, Tennessee with W. Later during the 19th century, the phrase was used as a euphemism for delirium tremens and the police. An early reference to this can be found in George Colman's farce Blue devils, a farce in one act (1798). The phrase the blues is a synonym for having a fit of the blue devils, meaning low spirits, depression and sadness. The blues has been a major influence on later American and Western popular music, finding expression in ragtime, jazz, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, hip-hop, and country music, as well as conventional pop songs.

The use of blue notes and the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics are indicative of the blues' West African pedigree. The form evolved in the United States in the communities of former African slaves from spirituals, praise songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants. I’m glad the song means so much to you.The blues is a vocal and instrumental form of music based on a pentatonic scale and a characteristic twelve-bar chord progression. I don’t have much recollection of the rest of the writing process… but I can tell you that typically we spend a lot of time refining our lyrics, so I imagine the rest of the lyrics took some time to get them where we were happy with them.Īnyway… those are my thoughts on the origin of the song. So we took that and added the melody and lyrics. The music existed already as an instrumental piece I had composed for a short film I worked on. And one of us said we are “two of the lucky ones.” We both recognized that as a cool idea for a song. What we can’t see in this case are the bugs they are snacking on. and they do this cool move where they soar around, then dive and turn really quickly… Rainer… hence the opening lines:Īnd in the sky flying around us were a bunch of swallows. It’s a pretty literal song… especially that first verse… on a lovely summer evening we were on a walk near our home on Vashon Island… we stood at the top of a hill that overlooks the water and beyond to Mt. I wrote the song with my wife and musical partner Elaine.

Hope this helps anyone wondering the meaning :)Ĭool to hear that you play the song everyday. Pete was nice enough to reply to an email of mine asking about this song, his reply was as follows.
